Innovation Award 2021: Jan Loney, www.metalier.com, Pittsburgh, PA, U.S. "Leaf Form" Left: the finished cast iron sculpture, Right: the original foldformed work used to make a sand mold.

The 2021 Innovation Award goes to
Jan Loney for her cast iron sculpture. Foldformed copper is used to make the sand mold for these works. Liquid iron is cast or poured into the mold and allowed to cool and harden. From the artist's description:

Leaf Form: "Cast iron sculpture created by making a sand mold using a copper fold formed work for the front and back of the mold." Hourglass II: "I used a fold formed piece to create a two part sand mold. I left the copper fold formed metal in the front of the mold and cast directly into it. The copper melted into the iron and became one with the casting. The delicate folds in copper are intact and areas of them have melted into the surface of the cast iron."
